A root canal can save a tooth from extraction.

Dental pulp is the soft area in the middle of a tooth where the nerves, veins, and connective tissues are located. If the dental pulp becomes infected or diseased, Dr. Bryce E. Justesen may recommend a root canal in Mesa, Arizona. Root canal therapy is the process by which our Mesa dentist removes the infected dental pulp and seals the tooth. If you experience any of the following symptoms, root canal therapy may be necessary:

  • Severe toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Discoloration of a tooth
  • Swelling and pain in the gums
  • A pimple on the gums that will not go away

The Root Canal Process

When performing root canal therapy, our dentist will first take dental X-rays to examine the shape of your root canals and to check for any infection in the bone. An access hole is made in the tooth, through which dental pulp, bacteria, nerve tissues, and debris is removed. Our Mesa dentist will clean out your tooth all the way down the roots using root canal files. Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, our dentist will seal it with a sealer paste and a rubber compound. The access hole is closed with a dental filling.
